If no one bet you can use a continuation bet to try to steal the pot. If you are at all familiar with stealing blinds this will make a lot of sense to you. When you are post flop, in a later position, and no one will bet in front of you, you can make a large bet to steal the pot. This strategy is even better when the flop is a ‘dud’ or overall not very good (to tight players). This works in a few ways
- You are displaying advanced aggression so it looks like you have a good hand
- You make the pot not worth anyone calling for their odds they are getting; just solid Texas Holdem
- You are utilising later table position to your advantage, so even if they play on you will always bet after them and can continue to exploit this
- People know all these points but still know it’s not worth calling because they aren’t getting the odds and they are at a disadvantage. They give up willing to finish the fight another hand.

A player with unpaired hole cards has about a 1 in 3, so 35% chance, of making the pair on the flop. So think of it this way, 2 times out of 3 a player with A-K won’t hit! So most of the time a player with A-K, K-Q, Q-J or any connector won’t make a pair. Now do you see why pockets are so much better? Factor this into your post flop strategy when you have pockets and also when you don’t.

Don’t play past the flop if you haven’t hit! This should really go without saying but it’s back to post flop strategy basics. Straight draws, flush draws, three of a kind, full houses – whatever you are chasing. If you aren’t 80-90% of the way there by the flop you aren’t going to get it. Factor in you chances of making the runner flush or gut shot straight, but don’t rely on it!

Holdem is a complex game that incorporates many different things. Good Holdem fundamentals are important to ensure that you have what it takes to succeed in this cut-throat world. And this goes double for online play.
Holdem Fundamentals – The 3 Things You Need To Succeed In Holdem
#1 Rules
You need to know the rules of the game inside and out. This is the first concept you must master before you will even begin to make a dime at poker. First cover off all the general rules (most of us know these any way). Next, target the more advanced rules like with multiple different sized all ins and multiple players splitting the pot.
Next is to learn the rules of the institutions you are playing at. This is the online poker site, the real casino your at or maybe its the rules at the local pub. Its also vitally important to know the rules of any tournaments you go in.
Many players get the jist of the game and race off. Then they wonder why they lose money. No seriously they wonder because they don’t know why one person got a pot over another. Or they lose a tournament because they broke a crown rule of the institution or tournament they were playing at. Cover off this base first.
#2 Cards
The next thing to learn about is the cards. This is a substantial thing to learn but it can be done. Although its not imperative to memorize this part 100% there is many a player that do – and they are usually extremely successful. First up is to learn the probability of the cards. Starting hands and they basic probability of winning. Next is to learn all the possible combinations. Yes this quickly skyrockets into a massive amount. You need to be able to calculate your plain/basic probability of winning – your odds. You need to be able to calculate your outs, which is making the best hand you can.
There is a lot of mathematics behind all this and this drives a lot of people away from really digging into this foundational point of poker. There’s two ways around this:
1) Become so proficient at the other foundations your strength masks your weakness in this area
2) Play online poker and use computer tools to do all the hard work for you
You can see why so many people play online poker right? I always advise getting a good basic understanding of the Holdem fundamentals first though. However, if you aren’t playing in person you don’t need to memorize everything – online you can use reference material. Remember though, the World Poker Tour is played in person.
#3 Betting
Betting is the next foundational skill in poker and is probably the most important. Betting is essentially THE game. Well after the rules and the cards anyway. Betting correctly can make or break you. Betting contains many components such as:
- How much to bet
- When to bet
- Check, call or raise
- Going All in
- Calling an All in
- SB/BB’s (small blind/big blind amounts)
- Your bet compared to SB/BB
- Bankroll
How much you bet is your biggest influence on the outcome of the game. No matter how much you try, you’ll never find 100% accurate ‘reference material’ on how much to bet in any certain situation. This is because you need to include your own feeling – your gut instinct – in how much you bet.
Holdem fundamentals are important. Probably more important than anything else. When it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter what table or online site you play at, what bankroll you have or what new-age strategy you are working on. What will really open the doors to consistent, long-term, effortless success are strong foundations in the 3 Holdem fundamentals.

Shorthanded No Limit Hold’em Poker Strategy

Online poker has seen many twists and turns lately as the market develops and matures. One of the biggest changes that have come about is the addition of “shorthanded” tables, tournaments, and sit and go’s. These shorthanded games have only 5 or 6 players at each table, and have seen huge popularity because players can play a higher percentage of their hands. Plus, the sit and go’s finish much more quickly than a standard 9 handed sit and go.
With a new table structure however, comes new strategy. If you want to be a winning player at the shorthanded tables, then throw your normal 9 handed strategy out the window, because if you play like that you’ll quickly be blinded away and find yourself broke. This article will give you all the changes you need to make to your game to become a successful shorthanded poker player.
The first big change you need to make comes about in your preflop play. At a normal 9 handed ring game you should be playing between 15-25% of your preflop hands, but at a shorthanded table this won’t cut it. Since blinds are coming around much more often, you need to get in there and play more hands, so you should be playing 30-35% of your preflop hands.
Some hands you should add to your preflop repertoire include hands like A-x suited, any two face cards, small pocket pairs, and suited connectors like 6-7 suited. These hands wouldn’t hold much value in a normal 9 handed game, but at a 6 handed table it is likely you’ll be holding the best hand when you enter a pot with the above listed hands. Of course, you should also play your normal selection of premium hands as well.
Another big change that needs to be made to your Internet poker game comes about in the form of relative hand strength. At a 9 handed table it is very unlikely that just a high card or a small pair will have any showdown value, because so many hands are out there it is highly unlikely someone has a better hand. However, at a 6 handed table you shouldn’t be so quick to throw those hands out, because there is a good chance that your pair of 5’s will show down at the end and win the pot.
When you have a great hand preflop it is an important decision for you to raise or to just call. If you have one of your premium holdings such as a big pair or A-K suited, you should certainly come in with a raise. However, with a hand like 6-7 suited, it is best to call because you want a bunch of opponents in the hand if you happen to hit the flop hard.
If you find yourself facing a preflop raise when you hold a great hand, make sure to put in a re-raise. Even if an early position play has raised, your hands like J-J are still probably best, so you want to re-raise to isolate him. If you just call you risk other players coming in behind you and busting your big pair.
The above shorthanded poker strategy will really ramp up your shorthanded game, and have you raking in pots at the shorthanded tables.
