Tournament Poker Strategy For No Limit Texas Hold Em

Most poker players start playing cash ring games. I wouldn’t say cash games are easier, but they are generally more plentiful both off-line in local casinos, and online as well. You do not have to make as many strategic adjustments in a cash game, so by and large, it is the better way to learn poker for the novice player. However, for most players, once they have a grasp of the game, switching to tournament play can be a challenge.
The most obvious difference between cash ring games and tournament play is the blinds. In tournaments, the blinds go up at a specific interval, forcing you to reanalyze your play on a continual basis. Not only to the blinds go up, but antes eventually come into play as well. So, if you do not adjust and make different plays as the tournament goes on, eventually you will lose your stack without every having played a hand. What this means is that a hand that is an easy fold, early on in the game, may become a hand that you will raise with later in the game. This takes some real getting used to if you are a player who comes from a cash game because it is something you really don’t have to worry about when the blinds are stable.
Another aspect that requires your constant attention in tournament play is the size of the chip stacks at your table and which ones are in a hand against you. What I mean by that is this: everyone starts with the same amount of chips. Unless you are playing a re-buy tournament, you cannot buy anymore, so once a player busts out, his or her tournament is over. This will have a huge influence on how that players players his cards in a given situation.
For example, if a player has a large chip stack, they are more likely to call you with a wide variety of hands, simply because they can afford to. They will try to ‘get lucky’ because if they lose it will not affect his chip stack very much.
By contrast, a very short stack is likely to either fold to your raise if they have nothing, re-raise and come over the top of you because they feel their situation is desperate and they need to win some chips or bust out trying. Both of these chip stack sizes need to be taken into account as you decide how to play each hand. If you just look at your cards, rather than the chip stacks you will be up against, you will end up in situations where you have to make a hard decision that could cost you all of your chips.
Tournament play is unique also in the fact that only a certain number of players will make ‘the money’. For example, if there are 90 players in a tournament, then maybe the top 9 will actually get paid. The rest of the players get nothing, no matter if they finish 40th or 14th. How close you are to making the money will dictate how you play your cards as the tournament progresses.
Obviously, you would like to win every tournament that you play, but your first focus has to be simply being paid for your time. As you become within a few players of making the money, you will want to become more selective (or less, depending on the table you are at!) about your cards to avoid ‘busting out’ short of the money. There is nothing worse than playing a tournament for several hours and then busting out on the bubble and not getting paid for your time. The goal in every tournament that you play has to be making the money. Winning the tournament can come after you have been paid.
Speaking of time, tournaments take a lot of time to play. At a cash ring game, you have the luxury of sitting down at the table and then getting up whenever you want. Not so with tournaments. Tournaments are played until there is one man left standing, and while there are periodic breaks, (once every hour online and usually once every 2 hours in live tournaments) it is not uncommon for large online tournaments to run for 6-8 or 10 hours or more and live tournaments in a casino take days in the case of WSOP events. The more players who are entered, the longer it will take to play, so you need to make sure you have the time budgeted to complete the event.
Overall, poker tournaments are a great spend of your money. You gain a lot of experience for limited exposure. You can only lose your buy-in, no more. You also get a ton of leverage on your money; the payouts can be huge for a very minimal amount spent. Once you learn the strategic plays, you can make quite a bit of money.

Tournament poker represents one of the easiest and quickest ways to make money in the game. Even the newest players can enter tournaments for free and cashout for thousands of dollars. Most online poker rooms offer so called multi-table tournaments which have massive cash pools and intense competition. Many players fail to take advantage of these games however, because they are unaware of the appropriate strategy to use.
Early Tournament Strategy
In the beginning stages of the tournament, what is most important for survival is to only play premium hands. This is because in every hand you will be competing with at least 8 or 9 other players. The increase in numbers makes it much more likely someone will always have a premium hand preflop like AK or AA. The biggest mistake to make at this stage is calling to see the flop with rag ace hands like A5 or A4. Even suited, these hands are very poor to play, simply because you will always be up against one or more players with a better Ace kicker. For example, if you call to see the flop with A4 and hit top pair, there will almost certainly be a player with a better top pair like AK or AQ. The best you can hope for is to hit the nut flush or two pair at minimum. However because the probability of this happening is so small, you will not be getting the correct pot odds to call to see the flop. Especially with a small chipstack, you cannot afford to make such loose calls.
Blind stealing during the early stages of a tournament is also considered irrelevant because the blinds are worth less than 4% of your entire stack in this period and don’t have enough value in themselves to try and bluff.
Middle Stage Strategy
This is the stage you need/should accumulate the most chips. Consequently, you should play much more aggressive in these situations and regular steal blinds in later positions or be value shoving with quality draws. You can also open your starting hand range up preflop to hands such as small pocket pairs or suited connectors. Value betting, cbetting and bluffing are common practice during the middle stage, so don’t be afraid to make some risky calls or all in bets. Short stack opponents will regularly be going all in with less than premium hands – usually hands like JQ or A7 suited, so don’t be scared to call these players for value if you hold a solid hand or high pockets preflop.
Final Stage Strategy
At the final stage of a tournament, most the pots are played preflop because there is so much value in the blinds/antes, and most people with top hands are happy taking the pot down before seeing the flop. Make sure you only play top hands, and always value shove with high pockets such as Jacks and above.

Some of you who are reading this already know how to play Holdem, others are still learning the game and some of you have already developed your own play style and skills but are still struggling to consistently win. Whoever you are, I’m sure that you, like me, want to learn about aggressive tournament strategies for Holdem. That’s why its worth your time reading this.
There are numerous different strategies, techniques and tactics; ranging from passive to aggressive, from tight to loose – and everything in between. The great thing is it’s never been easier to win a Holdem tournament. It doesn’t require hundreds of hours of practice time, super-complex strategies or having a massive bankroll. You don’t need to be a mathematical genius or to memorize charts and tables. All you need is the right strategy and the willingness to implement it.
So What Is An Aggressive Tournament Strategy?
An aggressive tournament strategy is essentially a strategy for winning a Texas Holdem Tournament by playing with an aggressive play style.
To ensure there is no confusion, I’ll clarify what aggressive means. Playing aggressive in Texas Holdem Poker means that when you do bet, you bet big and/or raise. Aggressive players never call and never check, ok? So aggressive means that when you do play at a hand, you bet a bunch. If another player bets and you come in the game, you reraise him.
An aggressive tournament strategy will include tactics like;
- Stealing big blinds
- Stealing small blinds
- Betting big early to take the pot before the flop
- Betting big after the flop to nip the hand in the bud
- Betting consistently through the river when you have a good hand
- Reraising over other players
- Bullying players that have significantly smaller stacks then yours

The biggest reason that an aggressive tournament strategy is so effective is because of the sheer amplified power of chips/stack size in a tournament. In cash games, if your low on chips you can simply fork out money to get more. This isn’t the case in a tournament. In a Holdem tournament you get a certain amount of chips and that’s it. You can’t buy back in. The only way to get more is to win pots. For this reason chips are literally like gold in tournaments.
Why Doesn’t Everyone Use An Aggressive Tournament Strategy?
The reason that everyone doesn’t use an aggressive tournament strategy is because they are simply too scared to. A lot of players are scared to bet or take a gamble in a Holdem Poker tournament because they are dead afraid of losing their chips and being out of the game. They would much rather try to fly under the radar and make it to a money table without having to risk a whole lot. However, passive players very rarely actually win at Texas Holdem tournaments. Sure, they might get pretty far but by the end of if they will get crushed because they won’t have enough chips to properly duke it out on the final tables.
The single most easiest thing to remember when implementing an aggressive tournament strategy is that when aggressive players play they always bet, and when they do its generally a decent amount. If you want to play aggressive never ever check, never call, never limp in and don’t fall into the trap of betting a small amount like one or two times the big blind. If you are going to play aggressive you need to make the commitment to either bet big or fold and you need to have the discipline to continue to do this.
